A recent review published on Psychiatrist.com (July 3, 2025) highlights Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome (WKS) as a severe, thiamine-deficiency-induced medical condition that can significantly impact maternal mental health, particularly when arising from hyperemesis gravidarum. The review emphasizes that WKS can present with mental status changes, including apathy and hallucinations, underscoring its potential to manifest with psychotic-like symptoms in pregnant individuals. This underscores the critical need for a high index of suspicion and prompt thiamine supplementation in cases of severe hyperemesis to prevent this debilitating and potentially life-threatening neurological complication.
