🔍 Key Findings from a 2019 JOEM Study on Jail Officers:

  • 🚨 53% screened positive for PTSD

  • 🔥 Burnout (emotional exhaustion, cynicism, reduced efficacy) was a major predictor of PTSD symptoms

  • 🎭 Emotional labor—suppressing true feelings on the job—was linked to higher PTSD

  • 💔 Low self-efficacy significantly increased PTSD vulnerability

  • 🧠 Pre-existing anxiety or depression was a strong risk factor

🛡️ Takeaway: The correctional workforce faces a critical mental health crisis. Interventions targeting burnout, emotional regulation, and psychological resilience are urgently needed.
