Pink Floyd’s songs aren’t exactly happy—they dive into childhood trauma, emotional pain, drugs, and mental illness. But somehow, their music still hits home. It strikes a chord with listeners—pun totally intended—and there are many, many of them out there, aren’t there?
Syd Barrett, one of the founders of Pink Floyd, was both a musical pioneer and one of rock’s most tragic figures. His groundbreaking work on The Piper at the Gates of Dawn defined the psychedelic era, but soon after, his creativity gave way to psychosis—likely schizophrenia, worsened by LSD use. Barrett withdrew from the public eye in 1974, living a quiet life painting and gardening. His legacy endures through haunting tributes like Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Wish You Were Here, reminding us of the thin line between brilliance and mental illness—and the need to support those facing it.
