This study examined the costs of presenteeism (being at work but not fully productive) and absenteeism (being absent from work) linked to psychological distress in older male and female workers.

Key findings include:

  • High psychological distress in both women and men was associated with substantial presenteeism costs (women: $6944; men: $8432 per person) and absenteeism costs (women: $2337; men: $2796 per person).

  • The connection between psychological distress and annual hours lost to presenteeism was twice as strong for men compared to women.

  • The study concluded that productivity losses due to psychological distress are significant for both older male and female workers.
